Why I Refuse To Flaunt My Wealth On Social Media – Rema Reveals
Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he deliberately avoids flaunting his wealth and achievements on social media, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured or compare their progress with his success.
The singer disclosed this during an interview with Jam FM, where he explained that many young people admire him and view his achievements as an example of what they hope to accomplish in life.
According to Rema, constantly displaying an extravagant lifestyle could make some of his followers feel they are falling behind or need to achieve success within a particular timeframe.
The 26-year-old artiste said he remains conscious of the influence he has on young people and does not want his success to become a source of anxiety or unhealthy competition for those still working towards their dreams.
He explained that people progress at different speeds, warning that seeing another young person succeed could encourage others to rush important decisions or put unnecessary pressure on themselves.
“A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured,” he said.
Rema added that some people have advised him not to concern himself with how his lifestyle might affect others. However, he maintained that he would rather remain considerate because people could misinterpret displays of wealth.
The singer also drew attention to the pressure young people sometimes experience from their parents, particularly when choosing careers and educational paths.
According to him, some children are pushed to study courses they have little interest in because their parents want them to secure high-paying jobs. He said he does not want his own lifestyle to add to the expectations weighing on young people.
Speaking about his personal fashion choices, Rema said he prefers keeping things simple and enjoys wearing streetwear rather than constantly dressing in expensive designer outfits.
He noted that his jewellery and wristwatches might be among the most extravagant aspects of his appearance, emphasising that he does not feel the need to display luxury at every opportunity.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Rema’s comments highlight his concern about the effects of social comparison and the pressure young people face when measuring their achievements against those of successful public figures.
