In a statement, Moghalu argued that the interview projected a negative image of Nigeria on the global stage and reflected poorly on President Tinubu. He noted that despite the country’s challenges, many around the world still hope Nigeria will achieve its potential.

“The interview made Nigeria a spectacle, not only because of the global reach of the program but also due to the format, which included a live international audience,” Moghalu said. He questioned what impression the audience might have formed after what he described as a “fact-based shredding of the country’s leadership and its performance.”

Moghalu further suggested that the episode highlighted deeper issues in Nigeria’s political culture, which he argued is driven more by opportunism and power struggles than ideology or policy.

“It was a sad reflection of a political culture with no beliefs, no policies, no ideology—just crass opportunism and the battle for power. Turn-coatism has become the norm,” he said.

The former CBN deputy governor also criticised the government’s choice of spokespersons, noting that loyalty often outweighs competence in political appointments.

“The fact that Bwala, given his track record, is sent to represent the President internationally says a lot about the standards for government appointments in Nigeria. Loyalty seems to matter more than ability,” he said.

Moghalu also questioned the practice of appointing former political critics as government representatives after they defect. “Why appoint former attack dogs of the opposition as spokespersons or ambassadors simply because they have defected?” he asked, adding that such individuals often carry political baggage that undermines credibility.

“He ended up trying to eat his words with blatant falsehoods,” Moghalu said. He argued that more credible individuals could effectively represent the government, even amid criticism of its performance.

Reflecting on international reactions, Moghalu revealed that friends from several countries contacted him after watching the interview. “It was a sad day for our country. Many friends from around the world called, shocked and sorry for Nigeria to be put in such a position,” he added.
