Wike made this statement during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), led by Executive Secretary Hamid Bobboyi, who sought land for constructing staff quarters in the FCT.

Expressing concern over the trend of institutions receiving land without any subsequent development, Wike noted that this negligence often leads to the emergence of shanties and criminal activity within the area. He stressed that agencies must demonstrate their financial capacity to develop the land within an agreed timeframe before any allocations are made.

“What we have found is that many institutions apply for land, receive it, and then sit idle for 15 to 20 years without any development. This allows for shanties to arise, attracting criminals and creating significant problems for us,” Wike stated.

He added, “If we grant land to any agency, there must be an agreement with the FCTA through the Land Department outlining a specific timeframe for construction. Should the agency fail to comply, the FCTA will reclaim the land.
