Wike Expresses Frustration Over Rising Out-Of-School Children In FCT
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has challenged the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to take decisive action against the rising number of out-of-school children in the country. Wike stated, āWe are all aware of the issues surrounding not only girl child education but also the growing number of out-of-school children. It is UBECās responsibility to address these children who are roaming the streets.ā
He reflected on past initiatives, including the establishment of Almajiri schools, and emphasized the need for continued efforts. āWhile we made progress in building schools and providing resources, the current situation is disheartening, with numbers having tripled. This is unacceptable.ā
He acknowledged UBECās efforts but stressed that state governments must also fulfill their obligations, particularly in terms of counterpart funding. Wike highlighted the link between education and insecurity, noting, āThe rising insecurity cannot be addressed without bringing these children back to school.ā
Additionally, Wike pointed out that the influx of people into the FCT is exacerbating the issue, but reassured that the FCT Administration is committed to tackling the problem.
