The 41-year-old Portugal captain featured in his sixth and last FIFA World Cup in North America this summer. During the tournament, he became the first player in history to score in six different World Cup editions, finding the back of the net three times.
However, Portugal’s quest for a first World Cup title ended in disappointment after a defeat to Spain in Dallas, leaving Ronaldo without the only major international trophy missing from his illustrious career.
Despite winning five Ballon d’Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles and numerous domestic honours, the World Cup eluded the Portuguese superstar. His best performance at the tournament came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals in Germany.
Speaking after Portugal’s elimination, Ronaldo admitted the defeat was painful but said he had no regrets about his efforts.
“It’s always painful to leave the World Cup like that,” Ronaldo told TNT Sports. “But, as I said during the press conference, I gave everything and did my very best.
“I leave with a clear conscience because I know I gave my all. That’s football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and life goes on. The truth is that this was my last World Cup.”
Reflecting on his international career, Ronaldo said he was proud of what Portugal achieved during his time with the national team.
“Tomorrow I will wake up with the same clear conscience I have today because I gave my best,” he said.
“I won three trophies with Portugal. Before my generation, Portugal had never won a major title, so I am satisfied.
“Honestly, winning the European Championship in 2016 carries the same weight for me as winning the World Cup. That’s why I leave with no regrets. I gave everything I had, and now it’s time to move forward.”
Ronaldo’s international honours include the UEFA Euro 2016 title and two UEFA Nations League trophies. He remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.
