An infuriated crowd in Abuja’s Abaji main market unleashed violence upon a middle-aged woman, identified as Rabiatu, over suspicions of pilfering a seasoning packet on Wednesday.
According to a witness, the altercation transpired at approximately 10:03 am as the woman purportedly concealed a seasoning packet within her hijab while pretending to browse items at an open shop within the market. A nearby vendor observed the woman’s actions, clandestinely stashing the seasoning.
The witness elaborated that while the woman had initially purchased salt, sugar, and Maggi, she clandestinely pocketed an additional Maggi pack while the shop owner was preoccupied with other customers.
As the woman attempted to exit the market, a commotion erupted when a bystander raised an alarm, accusing her of theft. Despite her denial, nearby women were urged to conduct a search, revealing the hidden Maggi packet within her hijab.
The unfolding spectacle attracted attention, with onlookers ready to take action against the accused. However, intervention from vigilant individuals, including some local vigilantes, thwarted further violence. They escorted the woman away from the market premises.
