Speaking on a recent episode of the Swift Conversations podcast, the ‘Johnny’ hitmaker revealed that sexual harassment was one of her biggest challenges, but she remained committed to her craft and refused to compromise her principles.
Yemi Alade explained that her breakthrough came when she realized she couldn’t just walk through doors—she had to break them down. “In those early days, all I had was my talent,” she said. “I didn’t have a bank account to sponsor myself. I had passion, determination, and a promise to myself and to God. I showed up, worked harder, and gave everything I had. But sometimes, talent wasn’t enough—people wanted something else.”
She recounted disturbing experiences: “From business meetings to studio sessions, even award events, I would encounter executives trying to touch me inappropriately. I was just a teenager. My own grandpa was rubbing my legs, and I was in shock. We were in a professional setting—why was this happening?”
Despite the trauma, Yemi Alade said she pushed forward: “I had to ask myself if I truly wanted a career in music, because the harassment was everywhere. But something inside me urged me to keep showing up. If a door was open, I walked in; if it was closed, I walked away. I refused to let this stop my journey.”
