‘11pm, 2am, 4am!’ Liyel Imoke Reveals How Obasanjo Kept Summoning Him All Night

Published

Former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke has recounted his experience working with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, revealing how the former Nigerian leader repeatedly summoned him for late-night discussions during an official trip to China.

According to Imoke, Obasanjo immediately began discussing ideas and proposals concerning power generation, outlining what he believed needed to be done to improve electricity production in the country.

Imoke said he returned to his room after the discussion, only to receive another call at about 2 a.m. summoning him to meet the former president again.

He explained that Obasanjo had written down several points and wanted to discuss them in detail, continuing his work despite the late hour.

The former governor added that another call came at about 4 a.m., with the aide informing him that Obasanjo had remembered additional matters he wanted to discuss.

Imoke said the former president continued sharing ideas and proposing solutions to government challenges, leaving him with little opportunity to sleep throughout the night.

He recalled that by 7:30 a.m., Obasanjo was already prepared for breakfast, while he hurried downstairs to catch up with the former president.

Imoke described the experience as remarkable, noting that Obasanjo’s commitment to work was extraordinary, although the repeated overnight meetings left him exhausted.

He said the experience eventually prompted him to contact the protocol team after the trip and request that, on their next journey with Obasanjo, he be accommodated in a hotel across town.

Imoke explained that his decision was intended to ensure he could get some rest without being repeatedly summoned for discussions throughout the night.

Despite the demanding experience, the former governor described working with Obasanjo as incredible, highlighting the former president’s intense work ethic and determination to address national issues.
