2027 Election Shockwave: Coalition Dismisses PDP, Eyes Obi, Atiku, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, And Jonathan For Presidency

Prominent political figures from northern Nigeria and key stakeholders across the country are reportedly moving away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a viable opposition force to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to investigations by the Nigerian Tribune, a broad coalition of political leaders from both the North and South has been in discussions for the past three months. They have concluded that the PDP can no longer function as an effective opposition.
In late December 2024, a committee was reportedly formed to finalize the creation of a new mega party, with plans to announce its structure by late February.
Sources indicate that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and other smaller registered parties are being considered as potential platforms for the coalition to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The PDP is not central to the coalition’s plans because many of its governors are believed to be hesitant about President Tinubu and are covertly supporting his re-election,” one source revealed.
Presidential Candidate Discussions
While discussions are ongoing, a final decision on the presidential candidate for the coalition has yet to be made. Several names have been proposed as potential candidates, including:
- Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (Former Vice President, PDP’s 2023 candidate)
- Peter Obi (Labour Party’s 2023 candidate, former Anambra State Governor)
- Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (Former Governor of Kaduna State)
- Rotimi Amaechi (Former Governor of Rivers State, ex-Minister of Transportation)
- Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Former Governor of Sokoto State, former House of Reps Speaker)
- Former President Goodluck Jonathan (considered a wildcard option to counter a southern APC candidate)
A source familiar with the discussions said, “The leaders are exploring four or five options and are waiting for the 2027 election calendar from INEC in May. Some believe that for a successful challenge to the APC, a southern candidate like Peter Obi should be involved.”
