2027 Elections: PDP Reveals Sh*cking Reason For Zoning Presidency To The South

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, effectively shutting out the possibility of a northern candidate contesting under the party’s platform in the next general election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision was among the key resolutions reached at the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday at its national headquarters in Abuja.

According to insiders, the move is aimed at easing internal tensions and preventing a repeat of past divisions within the party.

A NEC member explained: “The presidency was zoned to the South because the national chairman and presidential candidate cannot come from the same region. All stakeholders agreed to maintain the existing zoning arrangement. Besides, after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, it would not be fair to return the presidency to the North.”

Another source added that the arrangement would also discourage current National Working Committee (NWC) members from seeking re-election to their posts.

Party officials further noted that the decision was in line with the prevailing national sentiment. “Even the mood and body language of Nigerians favour a southern presidency, and the PDP is mindful of that,” one top source disclosed.

Fallout of the 2023 Election Still Lingers

Ahead of the 2023 polls, the PDP had set up a zoning committee chaired by former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom. The panel eventually threw the ticket open, paving the way for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to clinch the candidacy.

That decision deepened divisions within the party, giving rise to the influential G-5 governors led by then-Rivers State Governor, now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The group — which included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Ortom, Abia’s Okezie Ikpeazu, and Enugu’s Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi — openly opposed Atiku’s bid and worked against the PDP in the election.

In an effort to mend cracks, the NWC inaugurated another zoning committee on August 14, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri. The panel recommended retaining the existing zoning formula, a proposal that was adopted at Monday’s NEC meeting.

This decision ultimately places the PDP’s 2027 presidential ticket in the South, setting the stage for an intense battle over who emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
