2027 Political Earthquake: Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Jonathan In High-Stakes Ticket War
With over two years to Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, political maneuvering within the opposition has begun in earnest. Four influential figures — former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former President Goodluck Jonathan — are emerging as key contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tickets.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Vanguard, the battle is not merely about who will take on President Bola Tinubu at the polls, but also about securing control of party structures, building coalitions, and strategically positioning both seasoned rivals and fresh challengers.
Atiku’s Quiet Influence in ADC
Although Atiku has not officially declared his candidacy, reports suggest his loyalists hold strategic positions within the ADC’s National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and state chapters. Analysts see this as a calculated effort to influence the party’s presidential ticket in his favour. His silence on the matter has only intensified speculation about another run.
Obi’s Rocky Path in the ADC Coalition
Peter Obi, who aligned with the ADC coalition after his 2023 Labour Party bid, entered with strong public appeal and reformist promises. However, internal rifts have emerged. A leaked memo from the Obidient Movement in August alleged that its members were being excluded from key coalition decisions, creating tensions and eroding trust. While Obi’s online following remains strong, Atiku’s reported grip on party machinery casts doubt on his chances.
Amaechi’s Bold Declaration
In contrast to Atiku’s quiet strategy, Rotimi Amaechi has openly declared his interest in the ADC ticket. Speaking during an X Space session, he expressed confidence in defeating Tinubu, citing his insider knowledge of the APC and the President’s political style. However, with Atiku’s influence and Obi’s presence in the ADC, Amaechi faces an uphill battle unless he forges strong alliances.
PDP Courts Obi, Considers Jonathan
While Obi navigates ADC politics, the PDP is making overtures to bring him back, with leaders like PDP Governors Forum chairman Bala Mohammed arguing that his return could boost opposition unity. Yet, not everyone is on board — party chieftain Umar Sani dismissed Obi’s single-term promise as “political talk” and hinted that the North might favour Jonathan instead. Jonathan, eligible for one more term under the constitution, has been described by some — including former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido — as having “unfinished business” in Aso Rock.
PDP vs ADC: Struggle for Opposition Supremacy
Behind the scenes, the ADC and PDP are vying for dominance over the same opposition voter base. If the PDP reclaims Obi, it could weaken the ADC’s coalition. On the other hand, an ADC ticket for Atiku or Obi could threaten the PDP’s role as the main opposition party.
With alliances, defections, and political deals on the horizon, the coming months are set to shape the ultimate opposition strategy for 2027 — and determine who stands the strongest chance of unseating the APC.
