The founder and pioneer National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has stated that the party has not yet made a final decision on zoning its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He made this known in an interview with Punch, while responding to growing calls for the North to produce the next president, including arguments advanced by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, the ADC has adopted an open-ticket system, giving all regions equal opportunity to contest.

He said, “In ADC, it is open.”

Nwosu explained that the issue of zoning had been discussed during coalition talks, with some stakeholders from the North arguing for rotational fairness based on political history since 1999.

“I had some young Northern people come to my office… They argued that this republic started in 1999… that the South would have done 18 years and the North 10 years,” he said.

He added that the argument reshaped his understanding of the zoning debate.

“I never thought in that light, but that is the reality. If the North is saying leave it open, and the South gets it, they will still be ready to work with them,” Nwosu said.

On how the party will select its presidential candidate, Nwosu explained that ADC is considering two possible methods—consensus or direct primaries.

He said, “We are looking at two options. If everybody agrees, we go with consensus. But where there is disagreement, we conduct direct primaries, and whoever wins becomes the party’s flag bearer.”

Nwosu also disclosed that several prominent political figures have indicated willingness to support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate.

He said, “I have heard some of the candidates say that if they don’t win, they remain in the party and will support whoever wins.”

He mentioned politicians such as Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi as part of those who have expressed such commitment, while adding that he expects Rabiu Kwankwaso to also publicly affirm a similar stance.

The ADC founder stressed that transparency remains a core principle of the party’s internal processes, which informed its leadership structure.

He said, “From the day the document was signed, we were clear about an open ticket and transparency.”

Nwosu also noted that the leadership of David Mark was seen as key to ensuring credible and transparent primaries.

“That was part of the reason everybody agreed that someone with a reputation for transparency, like David Mark, should chair the process,” he added.
