According to Punch, at least four ministers are positioning themselves for state-level contests, particularly in states where incumbent governors will complete their constitutionally allowed two terms in 2027. The ministers reportedly involved include Adebayo Adelabu (Power), Muhammad Pate (Health and Social Welfare), Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (Minister of State for Labour).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently updated the electoral timetable, scheduling party primaries between April 22 and May 20. By law, holders of appointed positions must resign before participating in primaries.
Barring last-minute changes, Adelabu is expected to step down in the coming weeks to pursue the Oyo State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He previously contested the Oyo governorship but lost to Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2023. Sources indicate that his ministerial post is already attracting interest from potential replacements.
Femi Awogboro, an aide to Adelabu, confirmed his principal’s plans to contest the governorship, noting that President Tinubu has yet to formally instruct him to resign. “As of now, the President has not told Adelabu to step down. Only the President can do that. Until then, he continues his ministerial duties, but he is definitely contesting for the Oyo governorship,” Awogboro stated, adding that Adelabu would resign at the appropriate time to pursue his ambition.
Meanwhile, indications suggest that Pate and Tuggar may vie for the Bauchi State governorship. Pate, from Mainari village in Misau Local Government Area, previously contested for the position. Ibrahim Abdulhamid, Coordinator of Pate Media Centre in Dass, said that while nothing is yet official, a delegation of Bauchi indigenes encouraged Pate to run, and he has reportedly accepted.
Tuggar, from Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area, is also believed to be eyeing the Bauchi governorship. His Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, confirmed Tuggar’s interest, stating, “The minister aspires to run for the governorship of Bauchi State,” and added that he would resign in line with INEC’s timetable.
Sources also revealed that Onyejeocha plans to return to the National Assembly, having previously served four terms in the House of Representatives.
