She noted that she had not been an active member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 2011, following her unsuccessful bid for Senate re-election.
Speaking on Channels Television, Obasanjo-Bello highlighted that during her more than 15-year hiatus from active politics, she focused on furthering her education, including attending a leadership programme at Harvard University and completing her PhD.
She explained that her decision to join the APC was largely influenced by the fact that its members maintained contact with her throughout her political break.
Obasanjo-Bello said, “I have not been involved with the PDP, either actively or as a member, since 2011. So, I wasn’t really leaving one party to join another—I had no party.
“When I was away, the people who reached out to me and stayed in touch were all in the APC. I didn’t receive any communication from anyone in the current PDP or the ADC. That personal connection was the key reason.
“It wasn’t lobbying; it was genuine care. They reached out just to ask, ‘How are you? We care about you, we like you, we love you as a human being.’ That made all the difference in my decision.”
