The current economic difficulties stemming from reforms like fuel subsidy removal and currency fluctuations have raised concerns about Tinubu’s electoral prospects in 2027.

However, Nze Chidi Duru, the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, emphasized in an interview with Sunday PUNCH that these reforms were necessary to stabilize the economy.

Duru stated, “Our party acknowledges the ongoing tough economic environment which hasn’t significantly improved. When Mr. President assumed office, he asked Nigerians not to sympathize with him. He sought and worked hard for this position to lead Nigeria.”

He continued, “What gives us confidence is that President Tinubu is keenly aware of the expectations of ordinary citizens. Their minimum expectation is comfort and improvement in living conditions. Therefore, discussions about the 2027 elections are timely. In the life of a nation, four years is akin to yesterday.”

Reflecting on the electoral dynamics, Duru added, “Every political officeholder or politician understands that their first term in office is crucial. Voters, both supporters and critics, closely monitor performance and use that to decide on re-election.”

Addressing the prospect of re-election, Duru asserted, “As a democrat and based on personal belief, unless President Bola Tinubu decides not to contest, the APC will likely field our candidate in 2027. Incumbency advantage also plays a significant role.”

The APC remains optimistic about Tinubu’s leadership and electoral prospects despite prevailing economic challenges and evolving political landscapes.
