During the weekend, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, the highly endorsed gubernatorial candidate in the much-anticipated Edo election, made a profound impact during his visits to over ten locations. He received royal and heavenly blessings while engaging with Edolites from all walks of life. However, one visit stood out among the rest: his heartfelt interaction with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Uhogua, Ovia Northeast LGA.
Akpata was warmly welcomed by hundreds of “Mama, Papa, and pikin” as they danced and sang together.
The heartwarming clip from this engagement, which left many in tears, reminded me of the poignant lyrics from Peter and Paul’s song:
“If e good or bad, make we Thank God hey, Baba God na your hand work hey. No be lie hey. Haa, I say nor be lie hey, No be everybody wey sleep for night wake up see the light hey. See the future is bright hey, and e dey enter for eye hey. make you do your best hey. Baba God go handle the rest hey. Even if you no get money, dey jolly de shake body. No need to de tear body. if nor be God hey-hey. Na some be dead body…”
These lyrics are evident in the lives of many whom Akpata encountered at the IDP camp, as they remained happy and joyful despite their inability to access the basic necessities of life.
Akpata generously supported the IDP camp with numerous foodstuffs and essentials, assuring residents that his party, if elected, would do even more for them.
It is disheartening that despite twenty-four years of leadership by the People’s Democratic Party and All-Progressive Congress, at least three million Nigerians reside in IDP camps with inadequate basic amenities. This underscores the urgent need for compassionate, wise leadership like that of Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata in Edo State and beyond.
