During Thursday’s plenary session at the Assembly complex, the decision was reached under urgent matters of public importance following disturbing reports of disruptions to community peace and public activities caused by a Christian crusade organized by Prophet Ubadimma in Izzi Council Area.
According to a statement released by the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Sylvester Egede, the incident involved destructive actions by youths against Chief John Ekpono and his family in Aghara-Oza village, Ndiebor Ezza Inyimagu, Izzi LGA. They were accused by Prophet Ubadimma of using witchcraft to hinder community development.
The motion, sponsored by Godwin Abiri, representing Izzi West state constituency, highlighted the intervention of Izzi Council chairman, Stephen Nwankpa, to prevent further escalation of the situation.
Abiri emphasized the potential threat such activities pose to the peace established under Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration and urged for measures to prevent future occurrences or the resort to vigilante justice by community youths.
The House Leader, Kingsley Ikoro, seconded the motion, condemning the destructive behavior and calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible. Other members, including Chinyere Nwogbaga (Ebonyi North East) and Chikezie Nwankwo (Ohaozara East), echoed the need for legal action against the perpetrators to deter similar incidents.
Speaker Moses Ije-Odunwa conducted a unanimous vote in favor of the motion, solidifying the Assembly’s stance against unauthorized religious activities that could incite unrest and undermine communal harmony.
