Speaking at the National Assembly on Thursday, Speaker Abbas underscored the media’s responsibility in fostering public engagement and transparency. He praised the Press Corps for their dedicated coverage of parliamentary activities over the years and urged them to uphold journalistic integrity by providing objective and accurate reporting.
“The media plays a pivotal role as the fourth estate in our democracy,” Speaker Abbas stated. “Your efforts in keeping the public informed are invaluable. It’s essential that your reporting remains balanced and well-researched to maintain public trust and ensure citizens receive reliable information.”
Addressing the need for a conducive working environment, Speaker Abbas highlighted the importance of the newly renovated Press Centre in facilitating effective media operations within parliament. He pledged continued support for capacity building initiatives to enhance the professional skills of journalists covering the National Assembly.
“I congratulate the newly elected executive committee members and urge them to prioritize the welfare and unity of their colleagues,” Speaker Abbas added. “In an age where misinformation can spread easily, unity within the press corps is crucial for upholding truth and public interest.”
Earlier, Grace Ike, outgoing Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, commended Speaker Abbas for his leadership and vision in enhancing media infrastructure and supporting press freedom.
“The inauguration of our renovated Media Centre signifies the House’s commitment to our profession and the role of a free press in democracy,” Ike noted. “This modern facility will enable us to fulfill our duties effectively, thanks to the Speaker’s generosity and foresight.”
The event highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen media-government relations and ensure robust public discourse through responsible journalism.
