During the presentation of these aspirants, the community urged the Anambra State government to adhere to the zoning formula for selecting the traditional ruler from the three quarters of Nteje town: Ezi, Ikenga, and Ifite.
Addressing the press, Mazi Onyekwe Akwuba, a centenarian from Ifite Nteje, called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo not to recognize any candidate from outside the Ifite quarter. He emphasized that the Ezi and Ikenga quarters have already had their turns with the reigns of late Igwe S. A. C. Nnaemeka (Aborgu I) from 1976 to 2007 and late Igwe Rowland Odegbo (Aborgu II) from 2010 to 2022.
Mazi Akwuba expressed concern over attempts by aspirants from the Ezi and Ikenga quarters to contest for the traditional ruler’s position, warning that such actions could incite unrest in the community.
The presentation took place at the centenarian’s residence in Umunnakwa Agwa, Nteje, and was attended by members of the Ifite Nteje community, including men, women, and youths.
Akwuba reiterated that fairness dictates that since Ezi and Ikenga have had their turns, the Ifite Nteje quarter should be allowed to provide the next traditional ruler. He appealed to Governor Soludo to ensure that only candidates from the Ifite quarter are considered for the position.
“It would be unjust to disrupt the zoning arrangement by allowing candidates from Ezi or Ikenga to contest for the Aborgu III seat, which rightly belongs to Ifite Nteje,” Akwuba stated. He urged Governor Soludo to heed his plea, affirming that it is Ifite Nteje’s turn to provide the next traditional ruler.
