Yahaya, who also chairs the Northern Governors Forum, cited the state’s constrained allocation from the federation account as a key reason for his inability to implement the wage increase. Despite a recent boost in federal allocations following President Bola Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidies, Yahaya explained that Gombe State’s financial resources remain insufficient to cover the new wage requirements.

“The reality is that we cannot afford to pay the N70,000 minimum wage, and I suspect many other states are in a similar position,” Yahaya stated. He noted that even the previous minimum wage of N30,000 had posed significant challenges for state governments. Additionally, the governor highlighted that Gombe State has yet to receive the promised 20 trucks of rice from the federal government, which were intended to provide relief to its citizens.

The governor’s remarks underscore the ongoing financial struggles faced by state administrations in adapting to new economic policies and wage structures.
