In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos, NMA President Prof. Bala Audu stated that the association has instructed its members nationwide to promptly treat injured protesters brought to health facilities.

Audu noted reports of injury, violence, looting, and curfews in various states due to the protests. “We have also received reports of attacks on ambulances, making doctors feel unsafe. It is crucial to ensure the safety of medical practitioners so they can operate freely and save lives,” he said.

He advised doctors to exercise caution and avoid getting involved in the protests while traveling to work.

NMA Lagos State Chairman Dr. Babajide Saheed urged doctors to treat gunshot victims without requiring a police report, in line with the Treatment and Care of Gunshot Victims Act. He emphasized that gunshot injuries often need specialized care and equipment, and that lacking these resources could lead to severe outcomes for patients.

Saheed also called on the Federal Government to reimburse private health facilities for providing such critical services and to review and adjust its economic policies to enhance citizens’ quality of life.
