Eke, who founded the Deliverance Ministry of The Good Shepherd in Umuihita Avu, Owerri West Local Government Area, was convicted by Hon. Justice T.N. Nzeukwu on July 31, 2024. The case, known as Suit No. How/32C/2022; State vs Pastor Desmond Eke, resulted in Eke’s conviction after Mrs. Chioma Emuka, the prosecutor, demonstrated his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The pastor was found guilty of raping a 25-year-old mother of four under the pretense of delivering her from a marine spirit that he claimed threatened her family. According to the prosecution, Eke administered a substance disguised as holy water and anointing oil, which rendered the victim unconscious. She awoke to find herself being assaulted by Eke, who justified his actions as a necessary part of the deliverance process, claiming that his ejaculate would free her from spiritual bondage.

Defense counsel Ohaka, representing Nwanerei of Dauda Chambers, argued for probation instead of incarceration, citing the pastor’s good behavior and consistent presence in court.

Justice Nzeukwu convicted Eke of breaching trust and rape but acquitted him on the charge of inflicting injuries during the rape. The judge determined that the victim was not fully conscious during the assault, which precluded the possibility of injuries from resistance.

The case was initially reported to the police by the civil society organization Onurube Foundation, which continued to advocate for justice despite facing threats and pressure.

Marjorie Ezihe, the convener of Onurube, praised the court’s decision, noting that it serves as a deterrent to similar offenses. This case marks the first successful conviction under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of Imo State.
