On Tuesday, the Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) declared a public health emergency in response to the rapidly escalating Mpox outbreak across the continent, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) being the most severely affected. Since the beginning of the year, the DRC has reported over 14,000 Mpox cases and 511 deaths. While the DRC has experienced Mpox outbreaks for decades, the number of cases has been rising steadily, with this year’s case count already matching last year’s total. The virus has also reached areas that were previously unaffected.

In announcing the emergency declaration, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya stated, “With a heavy heart but with an unyielding commitment to our people, to our African citizens, we declare Mpox as a public health emergency of continental security.”

Kaseya highlighted that Mpox has now crossed borders, impacting thousands across the continent and causing significant distress. He called for a shift from reactive measures to a proactive and aggressive approach to contain and eliminate the Mpox threat.
