These issues were highlighted during the 4th Annual Scientific Roundtable Series hosted by the Centre for Integrated Health Programme (CIHP), with the theme “The Missing Link: Reducing Vulnerabilities of Adolescents and Young Persons Through Sustainable Interventions.”
Dr. Bolanle Oyeledun, CEO of CIHP, emphasized that the needs of young people are not being adequately addressed and stressed that tackling these vulnerabilities requires more than just policies. She urged that, as both stakeholders and individuals, there is a collective responsibility to empower young people with life skills, mental health support, financial literacy, and coping mechanisms.
Dr. Oyeledun called on the government to move beyond theoretical policies and ensure they are implemented with purpose and resources. “Policies must be brought to life with intent and support, rather than just discussed,” she said.
Dr. Chukwugozie Ujam, Deputy Director of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for adolescents where their concerns can be addressed. He highlighted the need for communities to be informed about reporting issues and noted recent improvements in police responsiveness to community concerns.
Dr. Olujuwon Ibiloye, Senior Technical Officer and Paediatric ART Lead at APIN Public Health Initiatives, emphasized the need for a systematic approach to identifying and addressing the issues affecting young people. He recommended a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders to ensure effective policy implementation and ownership.
Overall, the message from the roundtable is a call to action for a united effort from government, parents, and society to support and empower the next generation amid current challenges.
