As the 2027 presidential election nears, President Bola Tinubu is reportedly working to regain the support of northern politicians dissatisfied with his administration. This effort follows growing criticism from northern political figures about the perceived neglect of northern interests by the Tinubu administration. Key issues include allegations of marginalization in federal appointments and governance, which have led to significant discontent. Some northern leaders have even expressed regret over supporting Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
The source stated, “Certain political bigwigs were overlooked for positions they sought, leading them to work against Asiwaju’s re-election. However, this does not instill fear in Asiwaju’s camp. Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and I, all from the North, are reaching out to aggrieved stakeholders. We are committed to supporting Asiwaju and will engage with everyone involved.”
Recently, Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed also voiced support for a northern leader in 2027, stating he would abandon his presidential ambitions if former President Goodluck Jonathan decided to run. Mohammed believes Jonathan’s experience could be beneficial for revitalizing the economy.
However, former Communication Minister and APC figure Adebayo Shittu cautioned against such moves. He argued that while former President Jonathan is free to run in 2027, the current government should be allowed to complete its term, and changes should not be anticipated before then.
Senator Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central lawmaker, warned against the eagerness of some northern elites to return to power. He suggested that if President Tinubu successfully addresses issues like security, education, and poverty in Northern Nigeria, no northern elite would hinder his re-election bid.
Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Works and National Coordinator of the South-West Agenda for Asiwaju, expressed confidence that Tinubu has a strong base of loyalists ready to confront any opposition. He believes that as 2027 approaches, Tinubu will secure a second term as president.
