The Igbo elders also called for an immediate halt to unlawful and secret arrests, detentions, and extrajudicial killings across the country. Additionally, they demanded an end to economic blockades imposed on Eastern Nigeria, particularly the ongoing restrictions on the region’s ports.

In a statement titled “New Governance Model for Nigeria,” the UNIEC outlined a five-point agenda aimed at fostering peace and development nationwide. The council stated that its conclusions were reached after extensive consultations and analysis of the pressing issues facing Nigeria today. The statement emphasized that restructuring, regionalism, and a referendum are essential for ensuring peace and stability in the country.

The UNIEC further argued that by mid-2015, there were no insurgencies or movements within Igbo society aimed at overthrowing the Federal Government or establishing a Biafra. However, they claim that a tyrannical regime has since manufactured such conflicts, issuing shoot-to-kill orders against innocent youths.

The council strongly advocated for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu and other political prisoners, condemning the alleged torture and dehumanization Kanu has endured. They also highlighted the economic implications of keeping the Igbo/Eastern ports closed, arguing that reopening them would stimulate development in the region and beyond.

Finally, the UNIEC called for the restructuring of Nigeria to allow for single nationality regions alongside multi-ethnic regions, with the specifics to be determined through regional competition. They warned that without addressing the underlying political structure, no economic policy, no matter how well-conceived, would succeed beyond a superficial level.
