The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has criticized a young woman for posting a video of her mentally ill mother on social media.

According to the minister, the young woman shared the video for “personal gain and social media content.”

In the video, the woman, who chose not to reveal her name, introduced a mentally unstable woman as her mother. She explained that her mother’s mental health deteriorated after the death of her father. Initially, her mother was able to take care of herself and her siblings, but over time, her condition worsened. The young woman stated that her mother eventually left their home and has been living on the streets. She also mentioned that she visits her mother periodically to provide food and money.

Responding to the video, Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye condemned it, calling it “unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.” In a statement, she wrote:

“URGENT CONDEMNATION AND CALL TO ACTION

We condemn the disturbing video of a woman’s mental illness being exploited by her daughter for personal gain and social media content. This is unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.

We strongly oppose exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues. Mental illness requires compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation.

The Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs urgently requests information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure she receives proper care and protection. A reward is offered for prompt assistance in locating her.

Appropriate actions must be taken to address this situation. We call on everyone to respect the dignity and humanity of those facing mental health challenges and report similar instances immediately.

Let’s work together to prevent exploitation and support those who need it most.”
