Atiku, through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, had demanded an explanation from the federal government regarding the swift approval granted to Oando Plc—owned by the President’s nephew—for the acquisition of AGIP and ENI’s onshore assets. This contrasts with the delays faced by other transactions such as Shell/Renaissance and Mobil/Seplat deals.

In response, Onuoha issued a statement on Monday denouncing Atiku’s attempts to exploit an investigation she led into these acquisitions. She emphasized that she would not allow herself to be used for political witch-hunts, blackmail, or intimidation.

Onuoha clarified that her motion on the “Need to Investigate Irregularities and Alleged Corruption in the Nigerian Energy Security Provider, NNPC Retail Limited, and the Acquisition of OVH Energy Marketing” was a reaction to concerns raised by NNPC staff regarding their job security post-acquisition and the relocation of NNPC Retail Limited to Lagos.

She explained, “The Committee invited Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group CEO of NNPC, and other management members who provided detailed justifications for the OVH acquisition and the Lagos relocation, which was intended to improve market access and reduce operational costs.”

Onuoha added that concerns from some NNPC staff were addressed through transparent explanations from NNPC management, reassuring them about their employment status.

She affirmed, “As a legislator, I will continue to hold the Executive accountable. However, I will not be used as a tool for witch-hunt or blackmail. I will not aid the opposition in undermining the positive efforts of President Bola Tinubu, who is also the Minister of Petroleum Resources.”
