**Growing Up with Academic Influences**

Dr. Akande-Ajala is the second child and only daughter of Emeritus Professor Oluwole Akande and Professor Modupe Akande. Her father, a prominent academic and administrator, was instrumental in shaping her upbringing, while her mother, a strict disciplinarian, instilled a sense of discipline. Despite a childhood marked by strict rules, Dr. Akande-Ajala cherishes fond memories of her maternal grandmother, a businesswoman, who had a significant influence on her.

Her education began at Maryhill Convent School and International School, Ibadan. She furthered her studies in Canada at Highland Secondary School before returning to Nigeria to attend the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, graduating in 1991. Dr. Akande-Ajala then completed her housemanship at UCH before pursuing geriatric medicine training in the UK.

Initially unaware of geriatric medicine’s existence in Nigeria, Dr. Akande-Ajala discovered her passion for the field while working in Wales. Her close bond with her grandmother and subsequent exposure to the specialty solidified her decision to focus on geriatric care.

**Establishing Nigeria’s First Private Geriatric Hospital**

The idea of setting up a geriatric hospital in Nigeria began to take shape during her training when she encountered difficulties faced by families seeking quality elder care. Despite initial challenges and skepticism from potential supporters, Dr. Akande-Ajala, with the help of family and friends, started JBS Medicare Services in 2018. The success of this venture led her to establish JBS Gerontology Centre in early 2023.
