The protest erupted amidst NNPCL’s admission that its significant debt to fuel suppliers is threatening the stability of fuel supplies across Nigeria. The corporation cited financial pressures as a major factor impeding its operations and further straining the already fragile fuel supply chain.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, expressed concerns about the soaring cost of living, arbitrary fuel price hikes, and the ongoing scarcity. Falana called for an investigation into what he termed as “monumental fraud” in Nigeria’s fuel importation process.

During the demonstration, protesters chanted slogans and held banners criticizing Kyari’s leadership, with messages like “We are tired of fuel scarcity” and “No direction under Kyari.” They demanded increased transparency and accountability from the NNPCL.

Aminu Abbas, the Convener of the Coalition of Concerned Civil Society Organizations, addressed the media at Unity Fountain, questioning why a nation rich in oil resources continues to face severe fuel shortages. He urged President Bola Tinubu and other officials to act decisively to address the crisis and reform the NNPCL. Abbas criticized Kyari’s leadership, accusing him of exacerbating the situation and failing to mitigate the crisis.
