The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Instead, the President approved the IGP’s tenure based on the legal framework governing the position.

In a statement released on Friday, September 6, Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi explained that the IGP’s appointment follows the standard four-year term as outlined by law.

Adejobi addressed the confusion surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure, affirming that the President’s decision aligns with legal provisions and is not an extension of the IGP’s term.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to correct the misinformation regarding the IGP’s tenure. President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the IGP reflects the proper application of the law governing the office, not a tenure extension.

“An appointment letter, dated November 3, 2023, was issued to the IGP after his appointment was confirmed by the Police Council. This letter clearly grants a four-year tenure in accordance with Sections 215(a) and 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended).

“There is no need for the IGP to seek a tenure extension as his appointment already provides for a full four-year term. The false reports circulating on social media are the work of individuals spreading baseless narratives for personal gain,” the statement concluded.
