West Brom Rocked As EFL Hands Club Point Deduction Over Financial Breach
West Bromwich Albion have been handed a two-point deduction by the English Football League (EFL) after an independent panel found the Championship side guilty of breaching profitability and sustainability regulations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The sanction has plunged the club back into the relegation fight, erasing the confidence gained from their recent victory over Watford. As a result, West Brom have dropped from 18th to 20th place on 50 points, now sitting just six points above the relegation zone with two games left to play.
The charge centred on claims that the club exceeded the £39 million loss limit across the last three seasons up to 2024/2025—an allegation West Brom strongly denied. However, following a two-day hearing, the independent financial review panel ruled that the club’s losses did surpass the permitted threshold and recommended a two-point penalty.
The Baggies now require at least one point from their remaining fixtures to secure safety. They face promotion-chasing Ipswich Town at home before travelling to already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of the season. The club has been given 14 days to appeal the decision, with any final ruling potentially taking up to 28 days if challenged.
In an official response, West Brom maintained that they believe they complied with all financial regulations. The club said it disagreed with the panel’s findings and noted that the exact breach amount was not clearly stated, though it is believed to be under £2 million—described by the club as the smallest alleged breach under both Championship and Premier League rules.
West Brom added that they are considering their next steps regarding an appeal but stressed that their immediate focus remains on securing survival on the pitch. The club becomes the third Championship side to face a points deduction this season, following sanctions against Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday, both of whom were relegated earlier in the campaign.
Despite the setback for West Brom, Oxford United remain in the relegation battle as they sit six points from safety. They must win their remaining matches while hoping results elsewhere go in their favour to avoid the drop.
