The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has addressed a viral video showing police officers attempting to forcefully arrest a man in Benin City, Edo State.

An X user who posted the video alleged that the officers were trying to “abduct” the man for extortion but were thwarted by a crowd that intervened, causing the police to abandon their efforts and flee.

In response, Adejobi clarified that the man in question is a murder suspect and that the police were acting on a valid arrest warrant. He explained that the officers, who are part of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) investigating the killing of a police officer at Benin Airport in July, had to retreat when the situation became too chaotic.

“The policemen were performing their official duties. They are IRT operatives working on the murder case. The suspect was subject to a legal warrant of arrest. Although the officers had to leave when the crowd grew unruly, the suspect remains a murder suspect and will be apprehended eventually. It is better for him to surrender and address the charges against him voluntarily. The officers were acting within the law,” Adejobi stated.
