Ololade Ayelabola, a final-year Computer Science student at the University of Lagos, is determined to break the world record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk. Ayelabola’s challenge, which will last over 96 hours, is scheduled for September 29 to October 3 at the UNILAG Sports Centre. As a former beauty queen, she was inspired by the discrimination and bias that models often face during auditions despite their talent.

“What prompted me to attempt this is the stereotyping I’ve noticed in the fashion industry. There’s a perception that if you don’t meet certain height or appearance standards, you can’t succeed. Many talented models are sidelined because of these biases,” she explained.

Reflecting on her own experience, she recalled being praised for her walk during an audition but ultimately rejected for being “too short.” This motivated her to create a platform aimed at inspiring others to break free from stereotypes.

Her event will emphasize inclusivity and diversity, featuring models who are albino, have vitiligo, freckles, tribal marks, or are plus-sized. “I plan to walk with 100 models. Together, we will storm the runway and inspire everyone to believe that with passion and hard work, you can be whoever you want to be,” she stated.

Ayelabola also expressed her gratitude for the support she has received from the university community, particularly from Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola.
