The Defence Headquarters has denied allegations that Seaman Abbas Haruna was detained for six years, stating he was never arrested. Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliya, recently claimed on a popular Abuja radio station that the military had unjustly held her husband since 2018, accusing Brig. Gen. A.S. Adamu of ordering the detention. Shortly after, a video surfaced on social media showing Haruna resisting attempts by military personnel to disarm him, with gunshots audible in the background. In a follow-up interview, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, reiterated that Haruna had not been arrested, asserting, “People are just making an issue out of no issue.” He indicated that the investigation would clarify Haruna’s current situation and whereabouts.

Gusau also suggested that Haruna’s wife was aware that he had never been detained, promising that more information would be shared once the investigation concludes. Public reactions to the video have been mixed, with some expressing concern over Haruna’s treatment.

One soldier, Daniel Somtochukwu, defended Haruna, stating that no one should disarm a military official without proper cause. Others echoed similar sentiments, arguing that disarming a military personnel in such a manner was inappropriate. However, another military official, under the handle @ruggedpriest14, contended that Haruna’s refusal to comply with orders led to his ongoing situation.

Retired Brigadier General Bashir Adewinbi emphasized the importance of context in assessing the incident, noting that while personnel are expected to manage their weapons responsibly, disarmament may be warranted in certain situations.
