Despite the ban, the group encouraged business owners to continue their regular operations in the region. The IPOB Directorate of State reminded both local and diaspora Igbo communities that the prohibition on Nigeria’s annual Independence Day celebrations remains in place.
The statement urged Biafrans to refrain from any celebrations associated with Nigeria, reaffirming their commitment to an independent Biafra. It read: “The Directorate of State (DOS) of the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) wishes to remind Biafrans at home and in the diaspora that the ban on celebrating the ZOO Nigeria’s annual October 1st Independence Day is still in effect. As Biafrans, you should avoid any form of Nigeria’s Independence celebration globally.
“IPOB calls on Biafrans worldwide to conduct their usual business activities, as we are not part of Nigeria and have no ties to their British flag independence of 1960. While we acknowledge that some prominent Igbo figures played key roles in achieving this independence, it has cost the Ndigbo more blood than any other ethnic group in Nigeria to uphold.
“Biafrans have chosen to reject Nigeria’s bloody flag independence and are working towards restoring a united and prosperous Independent State of Biafra. Thus, every Biafran should dismiss this Nigerian-imposed unity as we anticipate the celebration of Biafra’s independence soon.
“Ndigbo must heed this call to refrain from all activities related to Nigeria’s independence tomorrow. No Nigerian flags should be flown in Biafra territory, and there will be no Independence Day activities for students in Biafraland. Everyone is encouraged to conduct their business as usual or use the day for family time and rest for those who prefer not to work.
“IPOB is serious about restoring Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty. Participation in Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations will be viewed as an act against the struggle. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure their children do not engage in any Nigerian Independence Day activities tomorrow. We are monitoring Biafraland closely. As an Igbo parent, do not allow your children to be sacrificed for a country that sees them as less than human.”
