Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office for South West Nigeria, made this statement to the press in recognition of the 2024 International Day of the Girl. She described this year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” as highly relevant, reflecting findings from a UNICEF analysis that highlights the courage and hope of girls facing challenges.

Lafoucriere pointed out that nearly one in four adolescent girls are not engaged in any form of education, employment, or training, nearly double the number of boys in the same situation. She also noted that one in five young women aged 20 to 24 were married as children, and almost one in four partnered or married adolescent girls have experienced sexual or physical abuse.

Despite these challenges, she emphasized that girls are actively taking steps to create a world where they are protected, respected, and empowered. “October 11 is a vital global occasion to celebrate girls and amplify their voices, actions, and leadership. This day also belongs to everyone committed to advocating for girls’ rights,” she stated.

Lafoucriere remarked, “Being a girl shouldn’t limit what you can do, where you can go, or who you can become. Unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of girls worldwide. Too many are being left behind, facing severe challenges that deny their rights and restrict their futures.”

She emphasized that girls cannot effect change alone and need allies who listen to and address their needs. “Together, we can create a future where every girl’s rights are protected,” she said.

Lafoucriere concluded by stating that evidence shows that with the right support, resources, and opportunities, the potential of girls globally is boundless. She highlighted that when girls achieve their goals, it brings society closer to realizing broader global objectives.
