JAMB Announces Extension Of 16-Year Admission Age Limit Until 2025The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced on Thursday that universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria can now admit candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025. Earlier this year, the minimum age for admission was set at 16 during the 2024 Policy Meeting, with a cut-off date initially established as December 31, 2024. This development sparked varied reactions from parents and the public.

In a statement released by JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, Fabian Benjamin, the board clarified that some institutions have extended their admission periods until July 2025. Consequently, candidates turning 16 by the end of August will also be eligible for admission.

“This measure aims to ensure fairness, as those whose 2024 admission lasts until August 2025 should not be unduly advantaged. Institutions are free to enforce their own 16-year age requirement as of 2024 if they choose,” the statement explained.
