The Chadian government had vowed to “eradicate” Boko Haram following a deadly raid in late October by the jihadist group, which resulted in around 40 soldiers killed and many others wounded at a military garrison. “We carried out several air strikes on enemy positions that resulted in many dead and wounded,” Deby told reporters in the Lake Chad region, although he did not provide specific numbers on the casualties among the militants.
Interim Prime Minister Abderahim Bireme Hamid reiterated that the operation is focused on protecting civilians while dismantling Boko Haram’s ability to launch further attacks. He emphasized that the goal is to eliminate the group and prevent them from causing harm to Chad and its neighbors.
The Lake Chad region, known for its vast waters and swampy terrain, is a known stronghold for various jihadist factions, including Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP). These groups frequently carry out assaults on both military personnel and civilians.
In response to the growing threat, Chad, along with its neighboring countries Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, formed a multinational force in 2015. This force, which includes about 8,500 troops, has been dedicated to combating the regional jihadist insurgency.
Boko Haram, which began its insurgency in Nigeria in 2009, has since expanded its activities into neighboring countries, resulting in over 40,000 deaths. In March 2020, Chad’s military suffered one of its most devastating losses, with nearly 100 soldiers killed in an attack on the Bohoma peninsula in Lake Chad.
