In response, the PDP hit back, accusing the APC of fueling the crisis currently affecting the party’s leadership.
This exchange comes amidst growing concerns over the political ambitions of key PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, and Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde. Their ambitions are feared to further escalate the internal strife and derail the reconciliation efforts led by the Olagunsoye Oyinlola committee.
The PDP has been divided for over a year, with factions backing Atiku and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Recently, Governor Mohammed, also chair of the PDP Governors’ Forum, hinted at his presidential aspirations for 2027.
Wike and Atiku are widely seen as central to the party’s struggles since their defeat in the 2023 election. The situation intensified when Mohammed joined the voices calling for the removal of PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum. However, Mohammed later indicated he would withdraw from the presidential race if former President Goodluck Jonathan rejoined the party and ran for office, though Jonathan has remained silent on the matter.
Meanwhile, Wike’s supporters are rallying behind Makinde as a potential 2027 presidential candidate, though Makinde himself has yet to decide on a bid, stating he would speak publicly about his future when the time comes.
In light of the ongoing crisis, APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim commented on the PDP’s struggles, expressing amusement at the situation while offering assistance if formally requested.
“We watch the crisis from the outside and laugh,” he said. “We hope they’ll soon come to us for help. This is what they want for Nigeria—a party that can’t even manage its own affairs. They’ve shown their inability to handle crises, which is why Nigeria is in this mess. If they realize their shortcomings, we have the Progressive Institute, where they can learn how to handle politics.”
In response, the PDP condemned Ibrahim’s remarks, calling them disrespectful. Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi accused the APC of deliberately sowing division within the PDP.
“We have no time for them,” Abdullahi said. “They’re laughing at us because of a few people trying to sow disharmony. But whether they have anything to teach us is another matter entirely.
