Fresh War Of Words: Oshiomhole Blasts Makinde Over Demand For UN Investigation

Governor Makinde had urged the UN and international human rights and accountability organisations to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Senate, Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria is a sovereign nation capable of handling its internal security challenges without external intervention.
The former Edo State governor described Makinde’s position as “unstatesmanlike,” accusing him of allowing partisan politics to overshadow national interest.
According to Oshiomhole, inviting foreign organisations to investigate the incident undermines the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies and diminishes the achievements recorded in securing the victims’ release.
“The Oyo State Governor’s call on the United Nations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and even the rescue is, in my view, most unstatesmanlike,” Oshiomhole said.
“He has taken partisan politics too far, and this Senate should condemn what I consider an inappropriate statement. Nigeria is a sovereign nation.
“When we begin to invite foreign bodies to investigate our internal security matters, we ignore the fact that our armed forces have, in several instances, successfully rescued abducted victims without the payment of ransom.
“To trivialise that achievement, as the governor appears to have done, is to downplay the efforts of the Commander-in-Chief and everyone involved in the rescue operation,” he added.
