Obasanjo Shares His Opinion On Being Part Of A Political PartyFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over the numerous challenges facing Nigerians, urging citizens to stay hopeful despite the country’s current difficulties. In his address, Obasanjo clarified that he no longer aligns with any political party, yet took the opportunity to praise Ugochukwu for his unwavering loyalty and support during the 1999 presidential campaign. At that time, Ugochukwu chose to stand by Obasanjo, despite the presence of Chief Alex Ekwueme, who was also vying for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination.
Obasanjo’s message of hope came at a time when many Nigerians are facing significant economic, social, and political challenges. He emphasized the importance of maintaining faith and optimism, even in the face of adversity.
“I urge you, as I have urged myself, to remain hopeful,” Obasanjo said. “Even when things are as difficult as they are today in Nigeria, we must not lose hope. Remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13: your faith must not diminish. And above all, continue to live a life of love — love for your family, love for your friends and enemies, love for your community, love for your country, love for humanity, and love for God.”
Reflecting on their shared history, Obasanjo recalled the early days of their political journey, noting that despite the divisions within their party, Ugochukwu remained steadfast in his loyalty. “When we came together during the campaign, there were those who questioned your allegiance. Some from the Yoruba camp saw you as a spy, while others from the Igbo camp wondered why you were supporting a Yoruba man. But you stood firm. You were unshaken, 100% loyal, and I will be eternally grateful for that,” Obasanjo said.
The former president also acknowledged Ugochukwu’s dignified conduct even after his political setbacks. “When your election was overturned, you didn’t seek revenge or leave the party. You stayed loyal, even when others might have turned their backs. Over the years, I’ve known I can count on you, regardless of the political landscape or personal challenges,” Obasanjo added.
As Obasanjo celebrated Ugochukwu’s 80th birthday, he reminded him of the importance of continuing to serve humanity and God. “At 80, what more do you need? You’ve lived a life of service, and that’s what I hope you will continue. Enjoy life, but remember not to overdo it,” he said with a smile. “You’ll celebrate 90, and I’ll be there. But 100? I may not be there, but wherever I am, I’ll be celebrating with you in spirit.”
The event not only marked Ugochukwu’s milestone birthday but also served as a moment for reflection on loyalty, service, and the importance of staying hopeful and committed to the greater good, no matter the challenges.
