Rivers Assembly Proclaims October 29 As Day Of Reflection For The Victims Of Unprovoked ViolenceThe Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has resolved to mark October 29 each year as “Commemoration Day” to remember the “unprovoked attacks on the legislature.” This decision was made during a plenary session held yesterday at the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road. Lawmakers explained that the day will serve as a solemn reminder of the tragic events of October 29, 2023, when the Assembly’s Chamber was set on fire, along with other assaults on the institution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

House Leader Major Jack, who presented the motion, condemned the arson attack that led to the destruction of the Chamber, pointing the blame squarely on the perpetrators of the fire. In his remarks, Speaker Amaewhule expressed frustration over the lack of accountability for the incident, noting that nearly a year had passed—386 days, to be exact—since the attack, with no convictions or progress in bringing those responsible to justice.

“It has been 386 days since the brutal burning of the Chamber, yet no convictions have been made,” Amaewhule stated. He also accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of orchestrating the demolition of the Assembly Complex on December 13, 2023, without the House’s consent. Amaewhule described the attacks as a grim reminder of the threats faced by the legislature, which he called the “bastion of democracy.”

The House also passed a resolution to observe October 29 annually, condemning all forms of attacks on the legislature, labeling them “iniquitous, scandalous, and malicious.”

In a separate resolution, the Assembly directed Julius Berger Plc to address the repair of damaged sections of the alternative routes to the Port Harcourt Ring Road. This followed a detailed report from the House Committee on Works, which received praise for its thoroughness. Lawmakers emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with the contracting firm to ensure that repairs and the overall progress of the Ring Road project are effectively carried out.

The session concluded with calls for justice and accountability regarding the attacks on the legislature, alongside a reaffirmation of the Assembly’s commitment to supporting key developmental projects in Rivers State.
