There are some CVs that, when read, make a lot of sense. These CVs not only make the reader happy, but they also inspire them. One such CURRICULUM VITAE has people talking: it belongs to Major General Cecil Osolease Esekhaigbe (Rtd. ), PhD.

Major General Cecil Osolease Esekhaigbe was born on February 9, 1959, in Irrua, Edo State, and is a native of Esan Central LGA.

His first degree, BSc. Political Science, was obtained from Lagos State University in 1990 with a Second Class Upper Division. He earned a Master’s Degree in International Law and Diplomacy with Distinction from the University of Lagos in 1991.

General Cecil, as he is affectionately known, received his PhD in Strategic Studies in 2010 from the Centre for Development and Strategic Studies, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Edo State.

Because of his expertise and proficiency, he handled key appointments during his military career. From 1986 until 1989, he was the Commanding Commander of the Nigeria Army Ports Clearance Unit. While working in that role, he was in charge of various activities.

He served as a military observer for the United Nations (UN) in the former Yugoslavia from 1994 to 1995. He was the team leader for the Kosovo Military Base Airport Monitors.

Gen Cecil worked as a Military Attaché in the Secretariat of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) from 1997 to 2000, and was a member of the ECOWAS team that wrote the Moratorium on the Import and Export of Small Arms and Light Weapons.

He was also a member of the ECOWAS team that established Charles Taylor’s Transition Government in Liberia, as well as a member of the Negotiation Committee for the Release of Detained Liberian Rebel Leaders, among many other noble obligations.

From February to December 2000, he was the General Staff Officer Grade 1 in the Directorate of Military Training at the Nigeria Defence Academy in Kaduna, where he oversaw the development of Military Training Programmes and the organisation of all Indoor and Outdoor Training Exercises.

From December 2000 until December 2001, he was the Commanding Officer of the Cadet Battalion at the Nigerian Defense Academy.

From 2001 to 2005, he was the Registrar of the Nigeria Defence Academy in Kaduna, where he was in charge of the day-to-day administration of the Academic department and the Secretary of the NDA Council. He oversaw the selection of Cadets into the NDA and devised a balance between merit and federal character.

From 2005 to 2006, he was Commandant of the Nigeria Military School in Zaria. As Commandant of the Nigeria Military School, he developed a vigorous programme of attracting highly experienced Civilian tutors to supplement the Military tutors in the development of students.

From December 2007 until December 2008, he was the Director of Planning at Army Headquarters, where he was in charge of the needs analysis of our military hardware.

He was posted to the National College as a Directing Staff responsible for the Strategic Leaders Training of the Participants after topping from the National War College Course 15. He worked in this position from December 2008 until July 2009.

He was promoted to the prestigious position of Principal Staff Officer Coordination, where he was in charge of producing the Weekly Training Program and coordinating input from the other Directorates.

He was in charge of the programming of strategic training tours, both locally and internationally, for the participants’ exposure.

He served as the Principal General Staff Officer (PGSO) under two Honourable Defence Ministers, Major General Godwin Abbey (Rtd) and Prince Adetokumbo Kayode SAN. He was in charge of First Sights (Correspondence) within the Ministry of Defence.

As the Defence Adviser (DA) to the Nigeria High Commission in London (the country’s largest defence mission), he was given authority over 11 countries: Germany, Holland, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Iceland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary.

The following are some of the notable distinctions and awards given to Major General Cecil.

  1. Forces Service Star: this is a recognition of over 15years meritorious service to the Nation
  2. Meritorious Service Star: this is a recognition of over 25years meritorious service to the Nation
  3. Distinguished Service Star: this is a recognition of over 30years meritorious service to the Nation
  4. Golden Jubilee Medal: this is a recognition of contribution to National Development through long service and good conduct in the Nigeria Army

  3. Commandant Prize for Best Research Project, National War College Course 15
  4. Chief of Army Staff Prize for Best Land Warfare, National War College Course 15
  5. Commander-in-Chief Gold for best All Round Participant in the National War College Course 15.

Cecil has not only received numerous outstanding accolades, but he has also completed the following notable military and non-military assignments.

  1. Consultant to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E): to ensure compliance to UN standard, he undertook the Monitoring & Evaluation of the Presidential Amnesty Programme;
  2. Assisted the former Minister of Defence General Godwin Abbe in disarming the former militants in the Niger Delta Region in 2008 and 2009;
  3. Member of the General Abbe led Presidential Committee on Amnesty for Niger Delta militants;
  4. Assisted the Presidential Amnesty Programme in the Reintegration of ex militants;
  5. As the ECOWAS Military Attaché, participated in the formulation of the ECOWAS Mechanism for Conflict Resolution, and disarmament of ex militants in Liberia and Sierra Leone;
  6. Consultant on Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration (DDR) to the Presidency on the Amnesty Programme;
  7. Consultant to the African Development Bank (AfDB) on Monitoring & Evaluation;
  8. Consultant to the National Economic Council (NEC) on Monitoring & Evaluation of the Strategies of Security Agencies Against Pipeline Vandalism and Oil Theft in the Niger Delta;
  9. Consultant to the Electoral Institute (INEC) on Logistics and Electoral Violence;
  10. Resource person at the National Defence College on Terrorism and Counter Terrorism Package;

Wow, the Esan Central indigene has a rich, healthy, and outstanding CV. Major General Cecil is an APC party chieftain and a committed democrat.
