Buhari Reacts To Deadly Stampedes, Urges Leaders To Address Poverty And Negligence

In a statement released on Sunday by his media spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and sympathized with the affected communities.
The statement, titled “Buhari Condoles Loss of Lives in Stampedes, Extends Christmas/New Year Greetings,” also conveyed his sympathies to Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Buhari urged them to share his support and prayers with the bereaved families and loved ones of the victims, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
Buhari specifically expressed solidarity with the Catholic community, which was deeply impacted by the tragic events, offering his prayers and condolences during this difficult time.
As the festive season approaches, the former President extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to all Nigerians. He encouraged citizens to embrace the values of compassion, unity, and peace, as taught by Jesus Christ.
“May the New Year, 2025, bring us all prosperity, peace, and good health,” Buhari stated, offering blessings to the nation.
The FCT Police Command confirmed on Saturday that 10 people, including four children, died in a stampede during a food distribution event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja.
In Oyo State, a stampede at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday resulted in 35 deaths and numerous injuries. Similarly, on Saturday, a stampede at the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, left many feared dead and others injured.
