The PDP accused the state government of coercing council legislative leaders into opposing the reinstated chairmen, preventing them from fulfilling their constitutional duties.
This was revealed in a statement by Chris Osa Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee, following an emergency meeting chaired by Tony Aziegbemi on Monday.
The meeting, which included the local government chairmen and leaders of the legislative arms, was convened to address challenges faced by the council chairmen since the court’s ruling. Aziegbemi urged the chairmen to resume their duties at their respective council secretariats and continue serving their constituents.
The PDP also advised council legislative leaders to remain vigilant and reject deceptive offers aimed at compromising their integrity.
“The law clearly defines their responsibilities, and they must resist any attempts to compromise their integrity. Despite facing backlash and condemnation from the judiciary and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for its illegal actions, the state government continues to shift blame onto the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA),” Aziegbemi stated.
The PDP warned it would pursue legal action against individuals, including Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) and Treasurers, who interfere with council funds without authorization from the chairmen.
“In collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the PDP will be sending a letter to the EDHA, demanding the immediate implementation of court judgments concerning council suspensions. The party strongly condemns the ongoing intimidation, manipulation, and blackmail by the APC-led state government aimed at pressuring council leaders to support illegal actions for looting council funds,” Aziegbemi added.
He further urged local government leaders to remain united in protecting the interests of their constituents and upholding the rule of law.
