The election, held on Saturday, was deemed illegal as it violated an ongoing court case concerning the matter.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Matters, TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, warned that anyone claiming to have been elected or parading as the monarch or monarch-elect of the Oba community would face arrest.
Nwabunwanne stated, “As the festive season approaches and people return home for the Yuletide, communities often host events, confer chieftaincy titles, and hold elections for Presidents General (PGs) and traditional rulers. We want to remind community leaders that there are established guidelines in Anambra State for these activities to ensure harmony and order.
“This government encourages communities to choose their kings or PGs but insists they follow the state’s guidelines and their community constitutions.”
He emphasized that all communities in the state must submit their constitutions to the Ministry for review to ensure that any elections or selections align with both state regulations and the communities’ own laws.
Addressing the cancellation of the Oba community election, Nwabunwanne explained that one of the candidates was disqualified for not meeting a requirement of fluency in communication, even though the community constitution only stipulated the ability to read and write.
“To prevent such issues, we require every community to submit their constitution to us. This allows us to supervise their elections or selections, ensuring peace and smooth transitions,” he added.
