Okocha criticized the Governor for failing to promote unity and peace among the people, instead starting the new year with actions that he believes will stir conflict.
The APC leader condemned Fubara’s decision to present the 2025 budget to a faction of the state House of Assembly, warning that this could lead to a major political crisis.
Fubara unveiled a ₦1.1 trillion budget to the House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo in December. This group of four members, under Speaker Oko-Jumbo, had previously agreed to hear the budget proposal in their session.
However, Okocha argued that Fubara disregarded the rule of law and judicial rulings in his approach to the budget presentation.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Okocha stated, “I had hoped the Governor would use the new year to foster peace, but instead, he continues to divide the state further. It is hard to believe that a Governor with such extensive experience in finance and governance would bypass legal processes.”
He continued, “The Assembly has 30 functional members, but the budget was presented in a setting that courts have deemed illegitimate. Having served as Chief of Staff from 2012 to 2015, I have witnessed three budget presentations. Out of the 32 members in the Assembly, we lost one, one claimed to have resigned, and we now have 30 functional seats, with 27 members on one side and three on the other.”
