Umar, who was a leading contender for the governorship ticket, had pulled out of the race shortly before the primary election, alleging breaches of the party’s electoral guidelines and violations of constitutional provisions.

He formally announced his resignation from the ruling party on Sunday, May 24, 2026, citing lack of internal democracy, unfair treatment of members, marginalisation of loyal party stakeholders, and disregard for grassroots opinions within the APC.

His departure comes amid escalating tension within the Bauchi APC following controversial primaries that have been widely rejected by several aspirants and party stakeholders.

Umar said his decision to join the PRP followed wide consultations with political associates, youth groups, women associations, stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South and the state at large.

He described the PRP as a party rooted in justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-driven leadership, noting that it aligns with constitutional democratic principles.

According to him, the time has come for patriotic leaders to unite in addressing poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and governance challenges in the country.

“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he said.

Umar also urged his supporters to join him in the PRP, saying the move would strengthen efforts toward good governance, accountability, and development in Bauchi State.

His resignation is part of a wider wave of defections in the state, as another senator from Bauchi, Samaila Kaila Dahuwa of Bauchi North, also left the APC after losing his return ticket and joined the PRP.

Similarly, House of Representatives member for Jama’are/Itas-Gadau Federal Constituency, Rabilu Bala Kashuri, resigned from the party after failing to secure its ticket, announcing his exit in a letter dated May 21, 2026.

Also, the 2023 APC deputy governorship candidate in Bauchi State and former House of Representatives member, Shehu Aliyu Musa, dumped the party, citing lack of leadership direction, injustice, and poor cohesion among party leaders.

Musa said he left after failing to secure the party’s senatorial ticket for Bauchi South, blaming internal irregularities and unfair treatment of members.

Since the announcement of the APC governorship primary results in the state, several aspirants and stakeholders have resigned from the party, alleging violations of internal democracy and lack of transparency.

Some aggrieved members claimed that direct primaries were not conducted, insisting that candidates were imposed rather than elected through a transparent process.

Reports also indicate accusations within party ranks involving alleged support for certain aspirants by prominent political figures, further deepening internal divisions.

Other party chieftains, including former lawmakers and grassroots leaders, have also resigned, citing unfair primaries, predetermined outcomes, vote allocation, and violations of party guidelines.

Many of the defectors said their decisions were driven by dissatisfaction with internal party processes and a desire to continue their political engagement in platforms they consider more transparent and democratic.
