In a recent statement, Okechukwu expressed concern over the team’s handling of the country’s economic challenges, particularly in the wake of the removal of fuel subsidies.
Okechukwu criticized PET for failing to provide adequate details on the revenue generated from the fuel subsidy removal during a recent National Assembly Joint Committee on Budget and Finance session. According to him, this lack of transparency risks derailing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to uplift millions of Nigerians from poverty.
In an open letter, the former Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) highlighted the economic hardships faced by citizens and urged the team to adopt more accountable and effective policies. He warned that persistent economic difficulties, coupled with minimal budget releases and excessive taxation, are hindering the government’s progress.
Okechukwu recalled the accountability displayed by past administrations, such as General Sani Abacha’s regime, where fuel subsidy funds were effectively utilized for public welfare through initiatives like the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).
He emphasized that the Presidential Economic Team must reconsider its approach, stating, “It is illogical doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” He called for greater transparency and effective management of resources to ensure the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
With the 2027 presidential elections approaching, Okechukwu urged PET to align its actions with President Tinubu’s vision for a fair and prosperous Nigeria, warning against any actions that could hinder his electoral success and legacy.
